Zofia Gorski, 87, of Newington, CT, passed away on December 12, 2015. She was the wife of 65 years to Stanley, who passed away in February of this year. The second youngest of nine children of Franciszek and Stanislawa (Burek) Sikorski, she was born in Bialystok, Poland. When their family home and farm was attacked by the Russians in 1940, Zofia, barely 12 years old, along with her family was rounded up, put in train box cars and deported to Siberia where they were assigned to hard labor. The men were separated to form Army Units which went on to fight the Nazis. The women and children who did not perish from starvation, including Zofia and her younger sister, Hania, were taken through Siberia, Kazakhstan, and the other southern Russian republics to Persia (Iran). They eventually settled in orphanages for Polish children in British colonies of Africa (Kenya, Tanganyika, Uganda). They remained there until the war ended when Great Britain offered asylum to many of the Polish orphans, including Zofia and Hania. There, she met her loving husband Stanley, and their two older daughters Liz and Lucy were born. The family emigrated to the United States in 1958 and settled in New Britain, CT, birthplace of their third daughter, Cela. In 1966 they moved to Newington, CT. She worked at Textron (Fafnir Bearing Company) for many years before her retirement. Previously, she had been employed with the Newington Children’s Hospital. Zofia was very involved with the Polish Lady Falcons Nest #811 of New Britain, serving on banquet and picnic committees as well as its secretary and president. She was a devout member of Church of the Holy Spirit and enjoyed sewing, cooking, learning to play golf, visiting her home in Boynton Beach, Florida, and spending time with her family, most especially as her time as Babcia to her grandchildren. Zofia leaves behind her three daughters, Liz Drummond of Glastonbury, Lucyna Gorski of Mt. Laurel, NJ, and Cecilia Ritone and her husband Anthony of East Hampton, her cherished grandchildren, Amber and Nico Ritone, her dear sister Hania (Sikorski) Dlugolecki of Bristol, and many loving nieces and nephews. Zofia’s family would like to express their appreciation to Newington Rapid Recovery Rehabilitation Center for their care and compassion.
