Ylda Selmond, affectionately called “Da”, passed away with her family by her side on Friday, June 24th, 2022, at the hospital in New York after battling a long illness. She was 59 years old.

Ylda was born on December 30th, 1962, in Vielle Terre, Jean Rabel, Haiti to Mr. Elius Selmond and his wife born Moncilia Voltaire. Ylda was the sixth child of the Selmond family.

She attended Institution Jacques Maurepas for her primary school, and College Henry Premier (Henry the first) for her secondary school, both in her hometown of Jean Rabel.  She later met and married Mr. Celhomme Jean-Mary in December 1988. Shortly thereafter, the couple relocated to Port-au-Prince and was blessed with two beautiful children, Sheralde and Rose Jean-Mary.

In 1993, in search of a better life and more opportunities, Ylda and her family immigrated to the United States. For about 3 years, Ylda and her family happily lived in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. While the family was about to conquer and live the American dream, Mr. Celhomme, her husband, suddenly left the family home abandoning her with her two little girls. She became a single mother from that day until she passed. As a devoted and courageous mother, she picked up her strength and entered the arena of life to fight for the survival and well-being of her two children. And with God’s help and with the special support of her sisters Roselie and Ines Selmond, her uncles, Charitable Voltaire, Celissa Beniste, and others, she was able to stand up to face the journey.

Through hard work and determination, she was able to secure the best education for Sheralde and Rose. She believed in sacrificing her well-being to secure her children a better life through quality education, and she succeeded in accomplishing just that.

Her journey was long, but she succeeded in providing hope, and encouragement and most importantly transforming their children’s sadness into moments of joy. She woke up early in the morning and came late at night just to feed and clothe her daughters. She never missed a school meeting and always wanted what was best for her children. She was quiet but very active in the lives of others.

During her life, Ylda enjoyed and celebrated countless family accomplishments. She succeeded in raising her daughters for whom she was both mother and father.

She preceded in death by her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Elius Selmond, her brother, Levainquer Selmond, her aunt, Nazilia Boileau, her niece Rose Dana Selmond, and her nephew Gary Selmond.

She is survived by her daughter Sheralde Jasmin and her husband Nehemy Jasmin, her daughter Rose Jean-Mary, her granddaughter Emma Grace Jasmin, her sisters Roselie and Ines, her brothers Arsene, Rochenel, and Idalbert Selmond, her uncles Joseph C. Voltaire et Celissa Beniste, her aunts Mrs. Celissa Beniste (born Celidia Voltaire) and Elizabeth C. Voltaire (born Elizabeth C. Beaubrun), and all of her cousins and friends.
