He is survived by his children, Woodson Peek Mathis, III and his wife Cassandra, Russell Mathis and his wife Christina; grandchildren, Zachary Mathis, Joshua Mathis, Virginia Mathis, Rachel Mathis, Rebekah Mathis, Daniel Mathis, Jonathan Mathis; siblings, Clarence Mathis, Mable Giles, and Samuel Mathis.
