William Tell Flukinger, 77, died on Wednesday, March 18, 2015, at home in Newnan, Georgia, surrounded by family. Born July 29, 1937, in Beaumont, Texas, Bill was the younger of two sons of the late Ross Flukinger, of Waller County, Texas, and the late Etta Mae Cade, of El Paso, Texas. As an adolescent, Bill spent his free time apprenticing with the pilots and mechanics at airfields in Mobile, Alabama, and New Orleans, Louisiana.
He made his first solo flight at 13 and earned his pilot’s license at 16. In 1956, Bill married his high school sweetheart, Mary Reid Quick, in New Orleans. The couple moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where Bill attended Louisiana State University and where, in 1958, Bill earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Mary had the first of their three boys.
In 1960, Bill joined E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. as an engineer. The family relocated with DuPont frequently, settling down for the boys’ school years in Mobile before Bill and Mary transferred a final time, to Newnan, in 1985. Bill continued working as a chemical industry consultant into his late 60s. Those who knew him well appreciated Bill’s loyalty, independent spirit, honesty and irreverent wit.
Bill is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Reid Quick Flukinger, sons Steven R. Flukinger (Leslie), of Mobile, Mark P. Flukinger (Maychele) of Atlanta, Georgia, and Scott P.
