William R. “Bill” Schaffer, 78, of Bath, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 17, 2014, at St. Lukes Hospice House, Lower Saucon Township. He was the husband of the late Viola (Illigasch) Schaffer, with whom he shared over 56 years of loving marriage until her passing in 2011. Born in Fountain Hill, Bill was the son of the late Robert G. and Harriet (Clark) Schaffer. He served his country in the US Air Force, and later became an equipment operator for several local companies, including Hanson, Inc., and Frank B. Saylor Paving. Bill was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem, Operating Engineers Local 542 in Virginville, and the American Legion in Bath. He enjoyed hunting and the mountains, and closely followed the Washington Redskins, and Mark Martin and NASCAR. Bill was a happy and positive person, who greatly loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors: daughter Cindy Ferguson of Allentown; sons William Schaffer and his companion Tammy Benner of Fountain Hill, John Schaffer and his wife Suzan of Bethlehem; daughter-in-law Donndie Schaffer; sisters Pat Tocci, Barbara Supeck and Sandy Stellato and her husband Lou, all of Bethlehem; grandchildren Jennifer Forker and her husband Charlie, Jason Hartzell, Robert Schaffer, Jr., John Schaffer, Jr., Christopher Yuhas, Jordan Yuhas, Marc Schaffer and Jimmy Benner; 12 great-grandchildren. Bill was predeceased by his son, Robert Schaffer.
