William “Bill” R. Reed, IV, son of Will L. and Pauline (Hoff) Reed, was born February 19, 1938 in Newton, Iowa. He was a graduate of Newton High School in 1957 and attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.
On March 28, 1960, Bill entered the U.S. Army where he served until discharged as a sergeant on April 27, 1965 during the Vietnam War. He received the following decorations, medals, badges or commendations; Senior Parachutist Badge, Expert Badge (Rifle), Good Conduct Medal and Expert 3.5 Rocket Launcher. Bill’s last duty assignment and major command was HQ & HQ Company 2nd Battalion 506th Infantry Third U.S. Army. After returning to Newton in 1991, he worked for the Elks Lodge and Hy-Vee where he retired in 1999. Bill was also a member of the American Legion Post 111, VFW Post 1655 and the Newton Elks Club.
Bill was preceded in death by his father, William L. Reed, III; and his brother, Charles M. Reed in infancy. Those left to honor his memory are his daughter, Lysia Peters of Davenport, Iowa; his two grandchildren, Elizabeth and Simon J. Peters both of Davenport; his mother, Pauline H. Reed of Newton and many friends.
