William P. “Bill” Moomaw, 82, of Bridgman, Michigan, died Tuesday, January 23, 2007 at Northview Manor in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he was under Hospice Care.Bill was born on July 9, 1924, in Staunton, Virginia to Joseph F. and Sarah (Brown) Moomaw. After graduating from Robert E. Lee High School in Staunton, Bill worked for the United States War Department as a civil engineering aide and then served his country in the U.S. Navy, stationed in the Pacific from 1943 to 1945.

He went to college on the G.I. Bill and graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1949. Bill married Therese Docis in 1953 in Toledo, Ohio. He was employed for many years at Marathon Oil Company in Findlay, Ohio, and managed two truck stops in Ohio before moving to Michigan where he was manager/owner of the Sawyer Truck Plaza for 17 years until his retirement in 1985.Bill received the St. George Medal, the highest honor for lay volunteers, from the Diocese of Toledo for his work with the Boy Scouts. He officiated high school football, CYO basketball and softball, and helped organize Babe Ruth baseball in Findlay. He was part of the team that established the Chikaming Volunteer Ambulance program, where he also served as a volunteer driver. Bill was an active member of St. Agnes Catholic Church serving as lector, Eucharistic Minister, and usher. He volunteered with the River Valley Senior Center, including several terms on the Board of Directors. He volunteered with Hospice at Home in Stevensville, Michigan, and Hope Hospice in Ft. Myers, Florida. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the Sawyer Lions Club. Bill loved playing bridge and golf, enjoyed reading, all sports, walking on the beach, and collecting rocks and stones. He was an avid River Valley High School sports fan.

Bill is survived by his wife, Therese; children Sarah (George) Preisinger of Rochester Hills, Michigan, Carol (Chip) Krieger of Grand Rapids, Ann (Dan) Sullivan of Oak Forest, Illinois, Mary (Paul) Grill of Fowlerville, Michigan, and Janet Moomaw (KC Cohen) of San Francisco; grandchildren Patty Sullivan of Springfield, Illinois, Colleen Sullivan of Oak Forest, Jennifer Krieger of Dayton, Ohio, and Emily Krieger of Grand Rapids; brother Robert (Peggy) Moomaw of Cameron Park, California; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. Preceding Bill in death were his parents; grandson Bill Sullivan; and brothers Joseph (Kitty) Moomaw and Edwin (Marion) Moomaw.Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 29 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Sawyer, Michigan, with Father Don Suberlak, CR. as celebrant. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Chikaming Township.
