WOODBURY – Mr. William Joseph McDermott, 90, died Wednesday, October 31, 2012, after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Margaret Louise McDermott.
Mr. McDermott was born May 16, 1922 in New York City, son of the late William Joseph McDermott and Maud Lucille Flannery. He had resided in North Syracuse, N.Y., for 30 years, and had resided in the Woodbury area since 1982. After graduating Seton Hall Preparatory he enlisted in the United States Merchant Marine, United States Naval Reserve in 1942. He served in all three war theaters during World War II including fighting at Normandy Beach on D-Day. He was honorably discharged in 1946 having achieved the rank of Lt. Commander, U.S.N.R. In 1948 he earned a Bachelor of Science degree and Chief Engineer’s License at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York.
