William J. MacMullen, 84, beloved husband of Irene (Kaminski) MacMullen passed away peacefully on January 22, 2016 at Hartford Hospital. Bill was born in Hartford on March 24, 1931, the son of John and Jean McMullen. One of his earliest jobs was at Royal Typewriter, where he would meet his wife, Irene. Bill and Irene were married on Flag Day, June 14, 1951 and would have celebrated 65 years of marriage this year. Nine-months following their marriage Bill received his draft papers on April Fool’s Day. He served honorably for two years in the Korean Conflict. Bill was employed by Viking Bakery for several years and then bought a franchise with Arnold Bakery. He loved his sports, and his three daughters remember being subjected to watching football and golf every Sunday on the one TV in the house. Bill was a member of the Manchester Country Club for many years and played golf every chance he got. Bill was also an avid duckpin bowler, and was a former champion of the Manchester Town Duckpin Tournament. He also enjoyed playing tennis. Bill had a quick wit and was a prankster. Even though he struggled with dementia for the past few years he still maintained his sense of humor and kept us laughing. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Irene, and three daughters, Lynn MacMullen of Manchester, Laurie Johnson (and Tony) of Rock Hill, SC, formerly of Simsbury, and Lea Welsh (and Michael) of Simsbury. Seven grandchildren; Ryan Welsh, Karlie Welsh (and Rachel), Derek Johnson, Sean Welsh, Cailyn Welsh, Brett Johnson and Rachel Johnson, and great-grandchild, Evan Welsh. Also, many nieces and nephews, including his “twin” John McMullen. He leaves many friends, including Bruce Dubiel, who was like a son and Charlie Buzzell of Maine who was like a brother. He was predeceased by a brother, John McMullen and a sister, Jean Trainor. We would like to thank Conklin Building 2nd floor at Hartford Hospital for the wonderful care given to Bill and also the Manchester Fire Dept E.M.T’s.
