William (Bill) Holmes of Plymouth MA passed away on January 22, 2020 with his wife Lenore and family by his side. Born in San Fernando, California on December 11, 1946, Bill grew up in southern California where he went on to graduate with honors from California State University Long Beach. Highlights of his undergraduate days included a voyage with Semester at Sea and a year running the University’s Experimental College. He left California to pursue graduate studies at The Ohio State University. Earning a Ph.D. in Sociology, he went on to join the faculty at Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio where he met his wife Lenore of 40 years. They moved to the Boston area in 1980, following his appointment to the Center for Applied Social Research at Northeastern University. His interest in criminal justice research later led to a position as the Research Director for the Massachusetts Committee on Criminal Justice. He was honored with the Paul Sylvester award for his contributions to criminal justice statistics. In 1992, he joined the faculty at the University of Massachusetts Boston to pursue his love of teaching. He remained there with an appointment in the College of Public and Community Services until his retirement in 2015. Bill was a prolific author whose body of work included numerous articles and academic texts. He was a recipient of the William Goode book award given by the American Sociological Association for his contributions to family scholarship. He also partnered with his wife Lenore to assist numerous social service agencies in evaluating the impact of their work with families. Together Bill and Lenore balanced their career interests with travel throughout the United States, Europe, the Caribbean, and Central America and time enjoying their winter home in Sarasota, Florida. A highlight of Bill’s travels to England included a week at the University of Oxford where he had been invited to speak on domestic terrorism. In retirement he pursued his passion for bridge, gave his golf game his best shot, and always enjoyed a glass of good wine with friends. Bill will be remembered for his quick and inquiring mind, his wit, and his calm and gentle presence. He leaves his wife Lenore, brother Roy Holmes, sister Jamie Holmes, niece Diane Browning, nephews Scott and Brian Holmes, and his many good friends.
