William was born in Afton Wyoming to Robert Clarence and Vinna Haws Lichfield. Among his many accomplishments, he secured two United States patentsa”a propulsion unit and liners for rocket motor casings. After leaving Thiokol, William was involved in several small businesses, including one he was actively engaged with until quite recently.
On April 23, 1952, William married the love of his life, Jacquelyn Sue Watson, in the Salt Lake temple. The couple was together 67 years.
