William (Bill) H. Atwood Sr., 80, of Lincolnton, NC passed away on October 22, 2014, at Brian Center in Lincolnton, NC. He was born June 15, 1934, in Springfield, the son of the late Harold and Amelia Hardin Atwood. He married Nancy L. Burleigh on November 24, 1956, in Laconia, NH, and she preceded him in death in 1994.

He is survived by a son, William H. Atwood Jr.; two daughters, Karen Atwood and Sara Anderson; three grandchildren, Megan and Kayla Anderson and Amber (Cody) Sellers; four brothers, Tom (Karen) Atwood, Dan (Linda) Atwood, John (Mary) Atwood, and Richard (Colleen) Atwood; a sister, Janet (Dan) Helmich; companion, Janet Phelan; and many nieces and nephews. A sister, Barbara Jones, preceded him in death in 2012.

Bill was a graduate of Ashland High School and later joined the U.S. Air Force, serving in Japan during the Korean War. After his military service, he resided in New Hampshire and was a union carpenter for several years working on heavy construction projects including power plants, breweries, water plants, schools, and hospitals. Later, Bill was a self-employed contractor in Ashland, working on many of the homes, farms, and businesses in the area.

Bill enjoyed fishing and hunting in both New Hampshire and Illinois. Later he developed an interest in bird watching and built numerous bluebird houses, establishing the first bluebird trails in Cass and Morgan counties. At the time of his passing, Bill was a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Lincolnton, N.C.
