William “Bill” Ellis, 89, Anderson, left to join his loved ones who had gone before him to heaven on September 6, 2010 at Bethany Pointe Health Campus-Anderson after an extended illness. He was born January 2, 1921 in Clinton, Indiana, and resided in Anderson since the age of five.

He served in the European Theater during WWII as a First Scout with the 30th Infantry Division also known as “Old Hickory” after Andrew Jackson. He was wounded in July of 1944 on the break out of Saint Lo, France shortly after the invasion of Normandy. During his service in the military, he received the American Defense Ribbon, Victory Ribbon, Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, 2 Battle Stars from The European Theater, The Bronze Star and on the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Normandy, he received from the Governor of France, the Medal for The Battle of Normandy. Bill retired in 1981 from Delco Remy Division of General Motors Plant 7 with over 40 years of employment where he had been a die maker.

He was a member of the UAW Local #662. Bill was a 50 plus year member of Fifth Street United Methodist Church where he served as Superintendent of Sunday Schools and was on the Board of Decons. During his life he achieved much, including being Senior Scout with three Titles which earned him 1st honors as well as being an Eagle Scout with Bronze Palm.

He is survived by his sister, Joann Ellis Grady and her husband Mead of Atlanta, Georgia; his daughter, Rebecca “Becky” Suzanne Ellis; sister-in-law, Jacqueline Platt Henkel; several nieces and nephews; as well as his friends, Bill Hammock of Bad Ax, Michigan, Barry Tharp of Anderson and his many friends from morning coffee at Arby’s, McDonald’s and the Shady Side Bait Shop as well as his friends at Ponderosa Restaurant where he was a regular and known to be “fandangtastical”. A special thank you to the caring people at Bethany Pointe.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Opal Brown Ellis; his sister, Lois Marie Ellis Wiley; his wife of almost 48 years, Landel Ethleen Platt Ellis; his eldest daughter, Landel Ethleen Lee Ellis; as well as his boyhood friend Leland Lee Rudrow and other elder family members.
