William “Ed”ward Charleston, 67, of South Bend, passed away on Wednesday, June 11th after battling mesothelioma and complications from surgery. He is survived by his loving wife Ruth, son Chad (Kim), daughter Kathryn Brewer (Jason), daughter Kristina, grandchildren Keeghan, Devin, Ellissa Brewer, and Olivia Charleston, sister Vesta Ferguson, and brother Maurice Bacon. He was greeted in Heaven by his parents Arch and Cora & two sisters Lavina and Joy. He was a Vietnam veteran with a Purple Heart for his service in the Marines. He was honorably discharged in 1967. He then met the love of his life and got married on July 13, 1968. After graduating from Michigan State University in 1972, Ed went on to become an executive in the transportation industry in Fort Wayne & Elkhart, Indiana, and Anaheim & Brea, California. He finally went on to work at his favorite job: the Assistant Sacristan at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Notre Dame. Ed was very passionate about his faith, family, and friends. He was a member of St. Anthony’s Parish in South Bend, where he was involved in many parish activities including serving as a sacristan and Eucharistic minister.
