Wilburn “Wil” Lawson, 87, died Friday morning, January 18, 2013 at Jordan’s Life Care Center in Bridgman, Michigan surrounded by his loved ones. Wil was born March 18, 1925 in Truman, Arkansas to James and Inez (Hutchins) Lawson. He grew up knowing how to work hard with his family share cropping. He moved to New Buffalo in 1951.
Wil was employed by Pullman Standard, retiring after 23 years. He also worked for New Buffalo Public Schools. Wil was a member of the F and A.M. Lodge. He enjoyed the outdoors and working in his garden. Wil loved fishing at Lake Michigan, in Arkansas, Canada, or wherever the opportunity arose. He enjoyed going to parties and listening to the band, but even more, he loved being around his family.
He is survived by his lifetime partner and best friend for over 38 years, Agnes Conway; his children Sherian Rupsis of Michigan City, Indiana, Kathey Mitchell of Three Oaks, Michigan, Roger “Dale” Lawson of Michigan City, and Sonja Behrens of Montgomery, Alabama; step children, Robert (Carol) Conway of Niles, Michigan, Sandy Westra of Dayton Lake, Michigan, Frank Conway of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Bill (Rebecca) Conway of New Buffalo and Jacki Poff of New Buffalo, grandchildren Meagan, Wayne Jr, Chad, Patrick, Layla, Christine, Angela and Jessica; step grandchildren, Bryan, Jacob, Elizabeth, Katherine, Ryan, sisters, Jymme Nell Walker of South Carolina, Sue Spears of Michigan City, and Joni Porter of Albuquerque, brother, Robert Lawson of Houston, Texas, sister-in-law Helen Crouse, and many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Allen.
