Wendell “Woody” S. Wood, 86, of Newington, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 11, 2014 at his home. He was born in South Portland, ME, the son of the late George and Ruth (Alley) Wood. He was the beloved husband of the late Shirley (Christiansen) Wood for 37 years. Woody graduated high school in 1948 and worked for two years before attending the American Institute of Baking for a year. He joined the U.S. Army in 1951 and served in Germany during the Korean Conflict. Woody was employed by First National Stores and Viking Bakery. Then in 1970 he owned his own bakery, the Baker’s Dozen and ran it for nine years. He retired from Food Mart then spent several years in Florida volunteering at Leesburg Hospital before coming back to CT. Woody was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Newington where he served on the church council and was in the bell choir. A loving and devoted father and grandfather, he leaves his son John Wood of New Britain, his daughter Carole Hill and her husband Jeffrey of Windsor, and his two granddaughters, Kristina and Tiffany Hill. He also leaves his sister Ellen Wood and a large extended family.
