Warren George Emil Schmidt was born on Thursday, March 10, 1921 to Charles John Schmidt and Naomi Gustina Baker Schmidt in their home on the family ranch on Muddy Creek at Bradford, Huerfano County, Colorado. Warren was delivered by his dad and his grandmother, Bertha Meyer Schmidt and on April 23, 2015 he passed away at the age of 94. Warren was named for his maternal grandfather, George Washington Baker, whose family emigrated from England to Boston, Massachusetts on April 17, 1635, and for his paternal grandfather, Emil Schmitt, born in Potzbach, Kaiserslautern, Germany, and immigrated in October 1880 to Nebraska and arrived in Custer County by 1885. Warren was dedicated to preserving his family history. He was recognized four times by the State of Colorado as a direct descendant of territorial pioneers. Warren’s first school, located three miles from the ranch, was the North Bradford School where he traveled to school on horseback or with a buggy. Later he attended school in Gardner, Colorado.
