Mrs. Wanda Barbara (Staszewski) Carroll, age 99, of Milford, passed into eternal rest, Friday, April 3, 2009 at the Maefair Health Care Center in Trumbull. She was born in Meriden, Connecticut, April 10, 1909. She was the daughter of Walter and Camila Staszewski, formally of Warsaw, Poland and the wife of the late Dr. Philip R. Carroll of Bridgeport. She was a former resident of Bridgeport and Laurel Beach in Milford.

 

She graduated from Meriden High School in 1926 and Bridgeport Hospital Nursing School in 1929 and attended Columbia University in New York. She worked for four years at Bridgeport Hospital, where she was promoted to Head Nurse.

Wanda was a dedicated advocate of programs and opportunities for the intellectually challenged at the local and state level and was Vice President of the Connecticut Association of Retarded Citizens for several years. However, she was most active at The Kennedy Center, formally known as The Parents and Friends of Retarded Citizens. There, she served on numerous committees for over 50 years and was elected Chairwoman of the Board of Directors from 1970 to 1975. In 1982, the Kennedy Center honored Dr. Philip and Wanda Carroll by dedicating to them the Carroll apartments in Bridgeport, a sheltered residence for independent living for intellectually challenged adults. Wanda was a Life-Time member of the Board of Directors of the Kennedy Center at the time of her death.

 

 

In addition to her husband, Dr. Philip R. Carroll, she is predeceased by two sons, Walter of Kingston, New York, and Roy of Bridgeport, her sister, Nellie, and two brothers, Matthew and Raymond.

 

She is survived by sons Philip and his wife Miriam of New York, Roger and his wife Joyce of Milford and Leo and his wife Barbara of Milford, six grandchildren, Michael Carroll of New York City, Suzanne Carroll of Los Angeles, California, Roger Carroll Jr. and his wife Maura of Scituate, Massachusetts, Dr. Christopher Carroll and his wife Eileen of Avon, Connecticut, Cynthia Carroll of New York City and Morgan Carroll and his wife Anne of New York City, six great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
