The Arizona community lost a long-time active member when Walter Switzer, Jr. died on June 13, 2015. He was born in Phoenix in 1920 shortly after his father, Walter Switzer, Sr., opened the Switzer’s Style Shop in downtown Phoenix.

Walter Switzer, Jr. proudly served for three years in the Pacific aboard the USS Farragut destroyer during World War II. He returned to Phoenix and began operating Switzer’s Inc. which became a multi-state 20 store business.

After retiring he said he wanted to be useful and plunged into community activities. He was an active member of Rotary 100 and was instrumental in establishing river trips for people with disabilities (The River of Dreams) and X-Tattoo. He kept a river bag packed and was ready to take his position in a raft on the Colorado on short notice to be paired with whoever needed assistance.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Grace Switzer, and their five children, Jean, Walter, Grace, Kay, and Frank, who were all present at his passing. He is also survived by his older brother, Donald Switzer, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
