Jewett City – Walter J. Tarka, 87 of Jewett City, CT was called home by the Lord on Sunday morning June 7, 2020.  He was born to the late John and Sophie (Lupa) Tarka on Thursday, July 7, 1932.

Walter graduated from Griswold High School in 1950.  While working at Plastic Wire and Cable Corporation he went back to school.  He earned his Bachelors of Science Degree from the University of Connecticut and later his Masters Degree from Eastern Connecticut State University.  Walter had a career as a science and history teacher in Voluntown, then Norwich where he retired from in 1994 after 25 years of teaching.  Walter’s interests included reading, bird watching, hunting, fishing and gardening.  He was an outstanding wood carver, creating spectacular carvings of birds and animals.  

Walter married the love of his life Eleana M. (Tramontozzi) Tarka on August 13, 1966.  They had a very loving marriage of 41 wonderful years.  She predeceased him on November 14, 2007.

He is survived by his son John Tarka, daughter in law Hillary Tarka, his grandson Harrison, and his older brother Thaddeus “Ted” Tarka.  

Besides his wife he was predeceased by sisters Julia, Helen, Angelina and a nephew Edward Tarka.
