TROY –  Walter F. Tanski, age 91, passed away peacefully with his daughters by his side on January 26, 2018 at Eddy Memorial, Troy.

Born in Albany to Louis and Anna Tanski, he lived most of his life in Troy. He graduated from St. Joseph’s High School in Albany, and later in life from Russell Sage College in Troy. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and served during World War II, spending time on the submarine, the “USS Quillback.” Walt was an employee of Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation, and retired from there after 40 years of service.

In addition to his parents Louis and Anna, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 68 years Catherine (Kay), and his daughter, Barbara Tanski. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Louis (Delores) Tanski, Elizabeth (Samuel) Mills, and Thomas (Marilyn) Tanski. Walt is survived by his sister, Florence (Edward) Spurgas of Charlton.

He is also survived by his three daughters, Susan (John) Roberts of Akron, Ohio, Lois (Paul) Bachman of Latham, and Karen (Joseph) Crudo of Watervliet.

Walt was a loving father and very proud grandfather. He leaves behind his grandchildren, Allison (Brendan) Grealis, Julie Roberts, Jonathan (Julieta) Roberts, Elizabeth (Matthew) Bogdanowicz, Paul Bachman, Holly (Zachary) Gleason, and Ellie Crudo (Lauren Monteith). He also leaves behind seven great-grandchildren, Noah, Amelia, John, Jacob, Raphael, Everett and Bennett. Walt is also survived by several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Walt was an amazing man and those who knew him will always remember him with a sparkle in his eyes and a joke on his lips. He so enjoyed humor, music, garage sales, carving his “nut baskets,” which he gave out to many, and his puzzles. He will be missed by all.

The family would like to thank all the staff at the Eddy Memorial in Troy for the loving care they always provided to Walt. A special thank you also to Gloria Kieber for her love and support.
