Mr. Walter Donald ‘Don’ Ferrell, Plainfield, passed away on the early morning of Monday, June 22, 2020 at his residence. He was 83. Don was born May 21, 1937 in Indianapolis, Indiana, a son of the late Walter H. and Vida E. (Ping) Ferrell.

Don attended Ben Davis High School thru his junior year and then graduated from Plainfield High School in 1955. He proudly served his country in the United States Army as a SPEC4 serving from 1957-1960.

Don was employed with the JCPenney Company prior to his enlistment in the Army and continued that employment upon his return until his retirement some 30 years later. After that retirement, he managed JCPenney furniture deliveries thru Robey Trucking Company for a couple years before starting his employment with the State of Indiana as the Facilities Manager for 12 years retiring in 2005. Don would have his facility employees pick up empty Marlboro cigarette packages on the grounds and would clip the “miles” to send in for free items such as blankets, tickets, coolers, jackets, cowboy boots, etc.  The Ferrell home was well stocked with Marlboro items and he didn’t even smoke those! His dedication to JCPenney Company continued after that with part-time employment at the Plainfield store, where he worked in the stock room for several years.

In his leisure time, Don enjoyed Euchre, which he would play at work on his lunch hour. He also enjoyed fishing, camping and coin collecting. Don loved going to garage sales, auctions and collecting antiques, an activity he enjoyed with his mother until her passing after which he continued to do with his wife.

Don loved car racing including NASCAR and the Indy 500. His favorite driver was Jeff Gordon and he had a room in his home dedicated to Jeff and his memorabilia.
He was a sports fanatic and loved watching the Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds. Don also was an avid fan of pro basketball and women’s and men’s college basketball, especially the Indiana Hoosiers.

Don is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Jeanne Ann (Stewart) Ferrell, whom he married June 17, 1962; his children, Debbie (Becky Orr) Ferrell and Bill Ferrell; his siblings, Barbara (Jim) Milligan, Jerry (Judy) Ferrell and Larry Ferrell.

In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in passing by his siblings, Garland (Mary) Ferrell, Linda Ferrell and Carolyn Ferrell.
