Mrs. Virginia Starr Mottola, age 96, of Newnan passed away June 12, 2020. Mrs. Mottola was born on November 10, 1923 in Roscoe, GA to the late J. Marvin and Ivadean Sanders Starr. During her school age years her father served as the Coweta County School Superintendant and she attended the Coweta County public schools. Following the eighth grade she transferred to the Newnan City School system to attend Newnan High School. At her high school graduation Virginia was awarded the Rotary Cup which was presented to the young lady with the highest academic average in her graduating class. Following her high school graduation she enrolled at the University of Georgia where she became a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. A period of turmoil in Georgia’s public colleges which caused 10 colleges to temporarily lose their accreditation led Virginia to transfer to The University of North Carolina for her sophomore year. It was during that year that she met her future husband, Charlie Mottola who was assigned to the U.S. Navy Pre-Flight School in Chapel Hill. The following year, Virginia returned to the University of Georgia where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. After her graduation and the conclusion of World War II she and Charlie were married and moved to Hanover, New Hampshire where Charlie earned his degree at Dartmouth College. It was during this time that the couple’s first child, Susan was born. Following Charlie’s graduation the family moved to Athens, Georgia where Charlie attended law school and subsequently taught and practiced law. The couple’s second child, Bette was born during this time. In 1953 Virginia and Charlie moved to Newnan where Charlie joined Virginia’s cousin, Walter Sanders in the practice of law. Soon after moving to Newnan, youngest child Jim was born. A few years later Virginia began working as her husband’s secretary, continuing for approximately 30 years until their retirement. Virginia was the last remaining founding member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Newnan. She enjoyed fishing, sewing, cooking, spending time with her children and grandchildren and later in life became an unlikely fan of Nascar. She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Mottola and her brother Marvin Starr. She is survived by her children, Susan Mottola Dudley, Bette Mottola Poss and James Van Sicklen Mottola , grandchildren, Chip Dudley, Jim Dudley, Van Mottola, Kacee Mottola, Jay Mottola, Wynn Mottola Griffin, Laura Poss, Katherine Poss Maxey and David Poss, as well as nine great-grandchildren.
