Virginia Mitchell Willis, of Smithfield, passed away at the age of 99 on Friday, February 2, 2024 in her home surrounded by her family. She was a native of Newport News, VA, born on September 11, 1924 to Benjamin A. and Nonnie M. Mitchell. She had been a resident of Smithfield since 1972.She was a charter member of Grace United Methodist Church in Newport News; and attended Bethany United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School until her health declined. She served as President of the Woman’s Club of Smithfield in 1981-82 and led the successful effort to establish the Riverside nursing home in town. She later proudly wore her 50-year service pin from the General Federation of Woman’s Clubs as she continued to support the Smithfield club into the 21st century.She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Mitchell H. Willis; brother, W. George Mitchell and son, James A. Willis.She is survived by her son, Mitchell H. Willis, Jr. and his wife, Janice, of Roanoke; her daughter, Sheila W. Gwaltney and her husband, Gerald, of Smithfield; seven grandchildren to whom she was their very special Mammaw; five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Her family is very grateful for the many years of loving care she received at home from Betty E. Crocker and Diann Green.
