Violet Ruth Merrill, the daughter of Tina (Shigley) and Everett Dobbins, was born April 26, 1920 at Northbranch, Kansas. She departed this life on Monday, September 4, 2017 at the Heritage Care Center in Red Cloud.
After completing her formal education in rural Jewell county schools, she devoted her interests to learning the farm operation while working alongside her parents. She had a strong understanding of raising farm animals and crop production. Violet learned to drive by operating the tractors and grain trucks to the local elevator. Through the years she developed a keen sense of marketing with her eggs, chickens, pork, beef and wheat crops.
She was united in marriage with George Loren Merrill on October 5, 1941. They farmed and raised livestock in northern Jewell County, Kansas. In 1950, they moved to a farm in Webter County between Red Cloud and Guide Rock. In 1970, they moved into Guide Rock to make their home. They loved antiques and started a profitable business from 1960-1990, know as Merrill’s Antiques. This allowed them to travek throughout the United States in search of the next great find. They bought and sold their antiques in Lebanon and Guide Rock stores and in numerous auctions.
She was a life-time member of the VFW Auxiliary and supported the organization both locally and nationally. She would tell you that the lessons she learned from her parents and grandparents were valuable and she hoped we could continue to pass them to future generations. These included Trust in God – Love your family and defend this country – Take care of the land and the animals – Live simple – Trust your instincts – Set aside time for fun with friends and family – Laugh often and Be frugal.
She was well known in Guide Rock for her love and care of the many cats that called her yard home. She believed that they gave much in return, as she never had to worry about rodents and snakes. She said they were worth their weight in gold. They definitely were the best fed animals in town.
George and Violet had no children. Left to cherish her memory are many neighbors, friends, long time friend-families (people that are as dear as family), cousins, nephews, and nieces that span coast to coast and border to border.
