Click here to view/print Funeral Folder Viola Mae Hurley, 84, of Curlew, Iowa, passed away Saturday, November 28th, 2020, at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg, Iowa. Viola was born May 24, 1936, to Martin and Anna (Stolt) Nissen in Drake, North Dakota and was raised on the family farm along with her six siblings. She graduated from Drake High School. Viola moved to Spencer, Iowa in 1959 and worked as a bank teller at Farmers Bank, where she enjoyed spending time with her friends, bowling, roller skating and playing softball. On July 8, 1972, Viola was united in marriage with Burdette Hurley and they began their life together on a farm south of Curlew.  Viola and Burdette were blessed with two children, Lawrence (LB) and Amy.  Viola stayed busy as a farm wife and as an assistant postmaster at the Curlew Post Office.  Viola loved playing cards, crafting and puzzles.  Viola and Burdette attended every school event they could and always had a van full of kids along for the ride.  She volunteered her time running the Curlew Community Center and leading many activities for the United Methodist Church in Mallard.  After retirement from the Post Office, Viola enjoyed spending her time having coffee at the Curlew Community Center and spoiling her six grandchildren.   Viola was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Anna Nissen; sisters, Myrt Bigger, June Green, and Bev Nissen; brother, Myron Nissen and brothers-in-law, Eldon Bigger, Orville Duval, Jack Green and BK Keller. Left to cherish her memory  are her husband, Burdette; son, LB (Jennifer) Hurley of Curlew, IA and daughter, Amy (Nick) Blaskey of Lakefield, MN; six grandchildren, John Hurley, Olivia Blaskey, Emily Blaskey, Ben Hurley, Michael Blaskey and Oliver Hurley; sisters, Sharon Duval of Colorado Springs, CO and Selma Keller of Fargo, ND; sister-in-law, Betty Nissen of Minot, ND and many nieces, nephews and close friends. The family would like to thank the Palo Alto County Health System for the wonderful care they gave Viola.
