Vina (Goodhue) Bennett, the daughter of Franklin and Sophia (Grove) Goodhue, was born April 6, 1911 on the family farm north of Newton, Iowa. She was a lifelong resident of Newton. Vina graduated from Newton High School in 1928.  She began her teaching career in the Jasper County Rural Schools.

On February 2, 1936, Vina was united in marriage to Erskine F. Bennett in Green Mountain, Iowa. She left her teaching for several years to have and be with her family.  In 1949, Vina returned to teaching as  rural schoolteacher. Several years later she became a sixth grade teacher at Woodrow Wilson School, and went on to become a counselor at Central Junior High School, where she retired in 1976.

Vina was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Erskine in 1986; and her three brothers, Robert, Lowell, and Clinton Goodhue.  Those left to honor her memory are her two sons and daughters-in-law, Carroll and Mary Jo Bennett of Newton; Jim and Virignia Bennett of Des Moines, Iowa; her six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
