Verona “Ronnie” Hohmann, 92, of Ottawa, died on Wednesday morning, May 17, 2017 at her home. Ronnie was born on October 7, 1924 in Quincy, IL to Rev. August and Elise (Scheid) Warskow. She later moved to Marion and then Centralia, where she graduated from Centralia High School in 1941.
Ronnie earned her Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Biology at Elmhurst College in 1945. During her college years she worked at the Emmaus House (special needs individuals) near St. Louis, Deaconess Hospital in St. Louis, and the St. Louis YMCA. Ronnie married George Hohmann on June 8, 1945 at St. Peter’s Evangelical and Reformed Church (UCC) in Centralia. Their father’s, Rev. August Warskow and Rev. R.C. Hohmann, officiated. They met at Elmhurst and were married while he finished his studies at Eden Theological Seminary, in St. Louis. In 1946, they moved to his first parish (Humbird/Fall Creek, WI). After that, they moved to Berne, MN, Lake Elmo/Stillwater, MN, Red Bud, IL and LaSalle, IL. They retired in Ottawa in 1987, where they have been members of First Congregational Church, UCC, ever since.
Throughout her life, Ronnie, was active in the work of local congregations and in the larger church. She directed children’s choirs for about 25 years, sang in church choirs about 50 years, and accompanied musicians often. In addition she taught in Sunday church schools and summer vacation church schools, and was active in church women’s groups. She also served in various capacities in larger church women’s groups in both MN and IL. For many years she also participated in and helped lead, various study groups.Ronnie was also a PTA officer, served as a Cub Scout Den Mother, was involved in the LaSalle Women’s Club and the Music Department of that club, and served as a volunteer for the blood bank.
She enjoyed reading, especially mysteries, visiting her children and having them in her home, and caring for family and friends when in need, especially her husband as his health failed prior to his death in 2013. She is survived by her sons David, of Eagan, MN, Samuel (Donna), of Oak Park, and his 2 daughters, Amy Weaver and Susan (Russ) Northrup, and Stephen, of Red Bud, IL, and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Rev. George Hohmann, and a sister Augusta Warskow. .
