Verona Esser, age 86, of Algona, died on Monday October 6, 2014 at the Algona Good Samaritan Care Center. Verona Bertha Ruth Zumach, the daughter of Reinhard and Amalia (Neitzel) Zumach, was born on October 15, 1927 in Fenton Township.
She graduated from Whittemore High School in 1946. On September 15, 1957 Verona was united in marriage with Howard Esser at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Whittemore. Together with Howard they owned and operated Butch’s Steakhouse in Whittemore from 1960 to 1965. Verona enjoyed gardening, growing and caring for her rose bushes and flowers, baking and spending time with her grandchildren and family.
Left to cherish Verona’s memory are her three daughters, Denise Krause of Granger and her daughter Jennifer, Debra Cunningham of Waukee and her children Jordan and Jacob and Deanna (Jason Berte) Esser of Algona and their children Alysia and Addison; twin sons, Randy (Shannon) Esser and their son Gavin of Melrose and Ryan (Rebecca) Esser and their daughter Ava of Detroit Lakes, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant grandson, Frederick Esser; brothers, Marcus, Melvin and Ronald Zumach; and a sister, Vernita Vaudt.
