Vernon “Butch” Schopf, 74, of Freeport, left this life, Thursday, July 6, 2006, surrounded by his family, after a brief illness, at FHN Memorial Hospital.
Born November 23, 1931 in Freeport to Elmer and Vera (Schroeder) Schopf. He married Donna Mae Fischer March 20, 1954.After his marriage he served his country in the army from 1954 to 1956. He then began his lifelong career in the Freeport area as a Farmer retiring in 1996.He was a long time member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Freeport. While a member he served a total of 16 years as a member of the board of Elders and over 40 years as an usher. He was also a frequent lector. He enjoyed his garden and raising gladiolus.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Donna of Freeport; his son, David Schopf of Freeport; daughters, Susan (Dean) Johnson of Stillman Valley, Joanne Schopf (Ray Ertel) of Des Plaines; 7 grandchildren, Stephanie (Mitch) Farris, Sherri (Jeff) Kalmer, Sarah and Suzanne Johnson, and Robert, John, and Andrew Schopf. Butch was also survived by his 3 sisters, Elenor Spitzer, Nancy (Richard) Hanley, and Shirley (Donald) Ruediger all of West Allis, Wisconsin; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; in-laws; and infant daughter, Sherry Ann Schopf.
