Vernie G. Powell, 71, of Shirley, passed away Monday, April 5, 2021 at Riverwalk Village in Noblesville. He was born October 24, 1949 in Murphysboro, IL to Vernie and Loretta (Needham) Powell.

Vernie strived to do his best in all things and was a competitive person. He loved softball, ping pong, cornhole, pool, tennis, volleyball and basketball, water skiing, boating and fishing, but his passion was bowling.  He bowled 5 perfect games. He enjoyed Chuck Norris and Bruce Lee movies.

Vernie retired in 2003 from Guide Lamp in Anderson after more than 30 years’ service. He was a member of the United Auto Workers Local 663 and the USBC (United States Bowling Congress).

Vernie is survived by children: Melody (Steven, Jr.) Hess of Shirley, IN Glenda (Jason) Jent of Seymour, IN, Michaelle Powell of Kingsland, Georgia; step-children: William (Pam) Baker of Shirley, Robin (Larry II) Lawrence of Pleasantville, IN; grandchildren: Kristan Dowden, Steven Hess III, Cody Anglea, Ryan Anglea, Jeffrey (Patsy) Shepherd, Chelsea Edens, Jessica (Matthew) Stiffler, William “Bubby” Baker, Kalen Baker, Kassidy Baker, Kari Lawrence, Veronica (Ryan) Spinnie, Larry Lawrence III, Aiden Jent, Jesse Jent and Cody Jent; 22 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild; siblings: Cecil (Kathy) Powell, David (Kelli) Powell, Phillip (Rae-Ann) Powell and Rita Goode, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his wife Oma Lee (Payne) Powell, his parents, grandchildren: Cassandra Powell, Miranda Anglea, Dylan Anglea and Oma Lee Lawrence, siblings: Robert Powell, Marilyn Ledger, Danny Powell, twin brother Ronnie Powell and Kevin Powell.
