Verna Jean Wozniak, 85, of Elkhart, passed away Thursday afternoon, Oct. 27, at her residence at Eastlake Terrace.
Verna Jean or VJ, as her friends called her was born Nov. 29, 1930, in Elkhart, to the late Carlton M. and Dorothy (Neu) Smith.
VJ married August S. Wozniak Jr. on Oct. 9, 1954, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church.
They celebrated 60 years of marriage, before he passed Aug. 1, 2015.
Surviving is her longtime friend Della Huffman of Elkhart, and Della’s children, who were like grandchildren to VJ, Sue Winkleblack of Eufaula, Ala. and Dick (Dolores) Huffman of The Villages, Fla.
Verna Jean was a 1948 graduate of Elkhart High School.
She remained very close to her classmates over the years and kept impeccable records of their lives, with scrapbooking about work, family, births and deaths.
VJ also enjoyed genealogy and was a member of the Women of the Moose and the Elkhart Historical Society.
VJ formerly worked for C.G. Conn, Kennatrask Corp. and Anderson Silver Plating Co.
But for 36 years, she worked alongside her husband, Gus, in the family owned business, Michiana Aluminum Foundry Co., retiring in 1984.
