Vercie Elese (Birdwell) Maggard, 77, went home to be with the Lord on December 1, 2019. She passed peacefully at her home with family. She was a resident of Franklin.
Vercie was born on September 7, 1942, in Moss, Tennessee, in Clay county. Her parents were Ulysses Birdwell and Versa (Cherry) Birdwell. She graduated in 1959 from Hermitage Springs High School in Tennessee. She married Donald Maggard on July 17, 1961, in Celina, Tennessee. They were married for 58 years.
She loved being with her family. She loved spoiling all her grandkids and spending time with them. She was a wonderful cook and baked her special “Chocolate Chip Cookies” often for the Church and Family Gatherings. She always had fun playing Cornhole with the family. She enjoyed her flowers and canned many home grown vegetables and fruits grown from their garden. She loved being a housewife and a mother.
Vercie was a woman of great faith and courage, and loved the Lord. She enjoyed going to church and reading her Bible. She belonged to Morning Star Baptist Church in Trafalgar, and was a former member of Beech Grove Baptist Church, also in Trafalgar.
Survivors include 2 daughters, Donna (Sam) Harrison of Franklin, Indiana, and Gina (Todd) Mitchell of Whiteland, Indiana; 3 grandchildren, Brandon Mitchell, Samantha Harrison, and Faith Harrison; brothers Delbert Birdwell and Dumas Birdwell; sisters Shirley (Paul) Matthews, Sandy (Johnny) Wheet, Barbara (Jasper) Merritt, Doneda (Ernie) Woodard, and Dana (Lyndell) Henson.
Vercie was preceded in death by her life long love and husband, Donald Maggard, brothers Ronald Birdwell, Gervis Birdwell, Cancel Birdwell; and a sister, Dorothy Smith; and her parents Ulysses Birdwell and Versa Birdwell.
