Vera Mae Burk

Vera Mae Burk, 91, of Lafayette passed away on Monday, November 5, 2018 at St. Anthony Health Care, surrounded by her family.  She was born July 26, 1927 in Attica to the late William and Esther Olson Knowles.

Vera attended Attica High School.  On April 20, 1946 she married Gerald W. Burk in Kramer, Indiana after he returned home from serving in World War II.  Together they raised 6 children.  Mr. Burk passed away on June 28, 2002.

Vera was a homemaker who devoted her life to her family.  Her greatest joy was spending time with them.  She loved cooking and babysitting.  Amongst the grandchildren, she was famous for her fluffy pancakes.  Everyone loved her peanut butter fudge and her vinegar pie was a favorite.  She served as the family’s counselor.  Her home was always a safe harbor for family during any personal storm.  Vera enjoyed watching sports and was a strong supporter of military veterans. 

Surviving are 3 daughters, Rita (Leonard) Herr, Brenda (George) Hainje and Lois (Sam) Hopson, all of Lafayette, and 2 sisters-in-law, Charlotte (Jerry) Bone of Texas and Jo Knowles of Lafayette.  Also surviving are 9 grandchildren – Tom Maxson, Victor Herr, Beth (Terry) Whitus, Brad (Michele Austin) Hainje, Rod (Rachel) Hainje, Carrie Rieken, Callie Maxson, Sammy (Angie) Hopson, and Christina (Jason) Stanfield in addition to 17 great grandchildren, 8 great great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, as well as close friends, Betty Andes and Linda Massie.  Vera was preceded in death by daughter Carrie Jean (Tom) Maxson and sons Robert Burk and Dennis Burk, along with 6 brothers and 5 sisters.  Vera will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her.
