He was born in Alexandria, Virginia on October 5, 1952, where he was raised. At the age of 19, he moved to California where he worked as a mason. In 1986, he moved to Phoenix and then to Flagstaff in 1995. In Flagstaff, he worked for Victor Labato as a mason.
He enjoyed playing the guitar. He had an outgoing sense of humor and he was kind to everyone.
Van is survived by his son, Wade Neely, and ex-wife Gali Dirocco.
