Val was born November 23, 1926 to Mildred Buckwalter and Lester Schreiner at his grandmother’s home in Mt. Carroll, Illinois. He grew up in Mt. Carroll, graduating from high school in 1944, and went to work for Micro Switch in Freeport. In 1945 he was drafted into the United States Army and served in occupied Japan under Gen. Douglas McArthur.

After discharge, he returned to his job at Micro Switch and married his high school sweetheart, Opal Jeanette Toepfer in 1947. Their first child, Gregory Schreiner was born in 1948, followed in 1949 by twins Lee and Lynn Schreiner. They settled in Orangeville, IL in 1951, where they lived for over 50 years.

Val left Micro Switch in 1964 for the Yellow Page Company where he worked until he retired. Val was active in many fraternal organizations, including the Masonic Orders, High -12, American Legion, 40+8. He was a long time member of the Orangeville United Methodist Church.

Val is survived by his children, Greg (Chuck Griffis) of Los Angeles, California, Lee (Charmaine) of Rockford, Illinois, Lynn (Margaret Gramley) of Sedona, Arizona, by two granddaughters, Valerie and Amy, five great grandchildren, and his brother Sam. He was preceded in death by Opal, his beloved wife of 65 years. He died peacefully at his home in Freeport on October 3, 2018.
