It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandpa, brother and uncle, Tom Ewing, who passed into Jesus’ arms on August 29, 2020. He was born on June 4, 1940 in Kansas, Illinois to Wilbur B. Ewing and Virginia M. Hicks Ewing.
Tom graduated from Honey Creek High School in 1958. He went on to earn his Bachelor’s degree in Education from Indiana State University in 1962. He began his teaching career at Lebanon Jr. High in Lebanon, Indiana. After several years he moved back to Terre Haute and taught at Glenn Jr & Sr High, Woodrow Wilson Jr. High and then his home for 30 years, Lost Creek Elementary where he taught 5th grade. He was an amazing teacher. To this day his former students would reach out to him and let him know the positive impact he had on their lives. During his teaching career he taught Adult Education at night, worked for Rick Jenkins Construction in the summer. In 1974 he was a founding member and volunteer firefighter for Honey Creek Fire Department. For 30 years he volunteered his time as a Reserve Deputy Sheriff with the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department. This was a passion that brought him so much joy. He was the true community police officer.
What brought him the most joy was his family and friends. Tom is survived by his loving wife, Carole Gummere Ewing, in which they married on August 26, 1962 and had just celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary the day before his stroke. His beloved son, Greg Ewing and his wife Kelly and beloved daughter, Lori Fox. The absolute pride and joy of his life were his grandchildren, Caroline and Chloe Fox, and Abby, Matthew and Noah Ewing. He was the best grandpa there ever was. He never missed a minute of his grandchildren’s activities and was always their biggest fan. He is also survived by his two sister’s he adored, Linda Ewing Ragland and her husband Bill of West Minster, Colorado and Nancy Ewing Morgan of Terre Haute. His nieces and nephews were special to him and include Monte Hughes, Amy Hughes Martin, David Ewing, Cindy Heramb, Keri Lynn Heramb, Mark Heramb, Chris Gummere, Dan Gummere and Toni Collier and all their families. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Paul Michael Gummere and wife Liz.
Tom had so many friends from his childhood, school years, all of his teaching buddies, sheriff’s deputy’s and his card group that were so special to him and made his life complete.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Virginia Ewing, brother, Tony Ewing, nephew, Scott Hughes, in-laws, Paul Bud Gummere and Betty Gummere and son-in-law Jack Fox.
