Tom was born July 6, 1924, in Cedar Rapids, IA, the son of James and Blanche Lee Chukas.
After graduating from Wilson High School in Cedar Rapids, Tom enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and saw active duty in the Pacific theater on the islands of Saipan and Tinian during WWII.
