Thomas J. Borowski, 63, of South Bend, IN, passed away Monday, April 9, 2007 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. At the time of his death, he was employed by St. Joseph County where he had worked as the Director of Human Resources since 1993. He was an avid golfer, golf memorabilia collector, and a student of the game of baseball. Although most of Toms career was in Human Resources and Benefits Administration field, during the late 1980s he was also an associate scout for the Cleveland Indians.
Tom was a member of Sacred Heart Parish and was a former board member for Achievement Forum. Other organizations that Tom served over his lifetime include Dismas House, United Way, Society of Human Resource Management, American Banking Association, and the Elbel Mens Golf League. Although he served in leadership roles and was proud of the success of these and other organizations; he spoke humbly of his own contributions.
He followed the local sports scene very closely, particularly IU basketball and football (he believed that the Hoosier football team is for real this year!). He also loved attending Notre Dame football, basketball, and baseball games.
Among the highlights of his lifetime were the birth of his two grandsons, Tommy (3) and Paul (11 months). He cherished the time they spent together learning about ducks, boats, trains, and toy trucks.
Tom was born on October 7, 1943 in South Bend, to Chester Thomas and Julia Henrietta (Wawrzyniak) Borowski. During his childhood, Tom lived on LaPorte Avenue in South Bend and attended Holy Cross School. He graduated in 1961 from St. Josephs High School. Tom completed his studies in 1965 with a B.S. degree in Finance from Indiana University in Bloomington. On October 1, 1966, in St. Josephs Catholic Church, Elwood, IN, he married M. Jane Stout, who survives.
Tom served in the Army National Guard for six years. He and his wife, Jane, lived in Niles, MI from 1972 to 1987, in Bay City, MI from 1987-1991, and in Indianapolis, IN from 1992-1993.
Also surviving are his children, Emily J. Borowski of South Bend, IN, and Jonathan T. (Alexandra) Borowski of Ocala, FL; two grandsons, Thomas Alexander Borowski and Paul Howard Borowski; his mother, Julia H. Borowski of St. Pauls Retirement Community; and his sister, Mary Jane (Patrick) Carey of Naples, FL. His father, Chester, preceded him in death on April 26, 1999.
