Thomas “Tom” Ermis, 91, of Elkhart, went home to the Lord on Saturday morning, March 7, at Elkhart General Hospital.
He was born in Elkhart on Aug. 13, 1923, to the late Louis and Lola (Zerbe) Ermis.
He was part of the Greatest Generation, serving in the U.S. Army in the 9th Infantry Regiment in the European Theater during World War II, and he was proud of serving his country.
In 1949, he married Shirley Biggs. They had three sons that he was proud of, Michael (Lynn) Ermis of Union, Mich., David (Janet) of Butler and Thomas (Cathy) of Elkhart. He also had five grandchildren, Mark (Michelle), Noel, Andi, Nick Ermis and Jessica (Josh) Hershberger, and six great-grandchildren. Shirley died May 30, 1967.
On Feb. 19, 1982, Tom married Marjorie Humes.
Marge survives along with five stepchildren, David (Filesta) Humes of Hamel, Minn., Debbie (Leapon) Lyon of Grand Junction, Colo., John Humes of Elkhart, Eva Mancewicz of Elkhart and Peggy Culligan of Strongsville, Ohio; 11 step grandchildren, Leslie, Rochelle, Grant and Ben, Zachary and Kevin, Rich, James, Shawntte, JR and Lindsay; and 11 great-step grandchildren. He loved, and was proud of, all of his family.
Tom was also preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Drucilla Daub and Betty Ermis.
He was an active member of Northside Church of the Nazarene of Elkhart, where he attended Sunday school and was a greeter. He retired from Barger Box in 1985.
He enjoyed being with his family was an avid car enthusiast. He enjoyed collecting model trains. He also enjoyed going to the Elkhart train station and museum, watching the trains arrive and visiting with the passengers. A special treat was his train trip to Washington, D.C., several years ago.
