On May 13, 2008 Thelma Y. (Birdsey) Armoneit, wife of the late Otto (Tom) Armoneit, departed peacefully from us to be with the Lord. Born in Bowdoinham, Maine on May 28, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Lillian (Greene) Young. She graduated from Gorham Normal School in Portland, ME where she received a B.S. Degree in Elementary Education. She had teaching positions in Maine and Connecticut. In CT, she taught 3rd grade in Middlefield, Portland, and Southington. The love and dedication she gave to her students lasted throughout the years. Thelma was also a special education teacher at CT Valley State Hospital in Middletown. She performed pioneering work in the education of autistic children. After moving to California in 1969, she taught at several schools for special needs children. Thelma married Tom Armoneit in 1973. She and Tom became foster parents for two autistic boys who lived with them for many years in San Diego.
