Terry Dean McCarty was born in Miami, Florida on September 5th, 1953.  He was the youngest of three children and was raised and baptized in Roanoke, Virginia.  He is preceded in death by his father Sergeant First Class Frederick Donald McCarty, mother, Eva Mae Jackson, and brother, Adam Sims.

Terry grew up participating in sports. He admired and loved watching his brothers, Adam and Willie C, play basketball and football; even modeling his game after theirs.  Terry graduated from William Fleming High in 1973.  In 1977, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree, in Education, from Elizabeth City State University.  In college, Terry played varsity football for years until he suffered a season-ending injury.  After his injury, he wanted to stay active in something meaningful so he pledged Iota Phi Theta (Iota Chapter), crossing in spring 1975.

In 1977, Terry began working for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), one of his proudest professional achievements, holding several roles.  It is here, in Washington D.C., where he met the love of his life, Clara McCarty (Caldwell).  Soon after, they married on August 29, 1981, in Greensburg, Kentucky and began building their family.

Determined to make a difference, while employed with the FBI, Terry coached high school football and served as a Volunteer Firefighter with the District Heights Volunteer Fire Department (1982-1989).  In 1989, Terry accepted a leadership opportunity with the Pratt Poster Company in Indianapolis.  He went on to hold positions in manufacturing, training, and safety management.

In his later years, Terry stayed active in his community by coaching track and field at Pike High School, and volunteering time to his fraternity.

An educator by training, Terry influenced the lives of many through the Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, substitute teaching, coaching sports, and most importantly as a father.

Terry leaves behind his wife, Clara McCarty (Caldwell) of nearly 38 years; three children, Frederick (Jackie), Kevin (Clemesia), and D’Ana McCarty; two grandchildren, Ava and Dean McCarty; brother, Willie C Jackson (Doris); nieces, nephews, and cousins.
