Terry Lee Lason, age 68, died in Kalamazoo, Michigan on Monday February 15, 2016. Born December 10, 1947 in Chicago, Illinois, to Louis and Shirley Lason, he attended Morgan Park High School in Chicago, Illinois and graduated from Western Michigan University. In 1973, he married Karen (Kocharoff) Lason.

He worked in Kalamazoo Public Schools for ten years and at the Kalamazoo Public Library for twenty seven years until retiring in 2006. Terry was a member of Temple B’nai Israel, and the American Coaster Enthusiasts. He served a term as President of New Year’s Fest and was a member of their board, was a member of the board for Whole Arts Theatre, and was a volunteer for the Gilmore International Keyboard Festival – Gilmore Education Programs.

Terry will be especially remembered for creating and implementing the Global Reading Challenge, collaboration between the Kalamazoo Public Schools and the Kalamazoo Library – and later, the Seattle Public Schools and Seattle Public Library. Family includes loving wife Karen (Kocharoff) Lason of Kalamazoo; children Barbara (James) Hayes, Barry (Amy) Lason; sister Lynn (Elliot) Miller; grandchildren Nathen, Mackenzie, Zachary, Wesley, Max, and Sophie; and several nieces and nephews.
