Ted E. Martz, 90, of Bethlehem, passed away on Wednesday, September 24, 2014 in Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, NY. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth A. (Sage) Martz, who died in 1996. Born in Greenwood Twp., Columbia Co., Pa. he was the only child of the late Roy B. and Gladys (Morris) Martz. He graduated from Forty-Fort High School in Luzerne County, East Stroudsburg University and received his Master’s Degree in Education from University of Pennsylvania. Ted served his country in the U.S. Navy as a Corpsman during World War II on Iwo Jima. He was a Purple Heart recipient. He taught Physical Education, Swimming and Health for over 30 years at Liberty and Freedom High Schools in Bethlehem. Ted was a PIAA Athletic Official for Basketball, Wrestling, Soccer, Volleyball, Baseball and Swimming/Diving. He founded the Swimming and Diving program at Liberty High School and the Volleyball Program at Freedom High School. In addition, Ted coached football at Liberty and swimming and diving at Freedom. He coached swimming at Northampton County Country Club and Meuser Pool in Easton. In his retirement, he coached soccer for five years at Muhlenburg College and taught at the Gateway School for two years. Ted was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Bethlehem. He was an Alumni Board member at ESU and Past President for Northampton County of PASR. He was active in H. Stanley Goodwin Lodge #648 F&AM, the Lehigh Valley Kiwanias and the V.F.W. He was a member of the Pocono Dance and Social Club where he enjoyed dancing with Margie. Ted was an avid golfer and enjoyed Bridge, Pinochle and Bowling with his late wife. Survivors: his devoted daughters, Holly Martz-Evans and her husband, Ted of Kerhonkson, NY with whom he resided and Jill Boehm and her husband, David of Jacksonville, FL; 7 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Ted is also survived by a companion, Margie Williams of Stroudsburg. In addition to his wife, Ted was preceded in death by a son, Kirk W. Martz and a daughter, Melanie Crouthamel.
