Sue Corter Schmalz, 91, of Bloomington, Indiana died on Wednesday, October 10, 2012. Sue was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Mabel Corter, her daughter, Deborah Schmalz Gandolf, and her grandson, Jason Gandolf. Surviving Sue are her husband, Richard H. Schmalz, her daughters, Mary Beth Schmalz (Urban Wemmerlov) of Madison, Wisconsin and Sarah Jane Templin (Tom Templin) of Lafayette, Indiana, her six grandchildren, Joshua Gandolf (Tina), Katharine Stahl (Benjamin), Adam Gandolf, Nicholas Gandolf (Katie), Anthony Gandolf, and Andrew Templin and three great-grandchildren, Krista and Marybeth Gandolf and Mae Rose Stahl.

Sue Schmalz was born on May 28, 1921 in Johnson County, Indiana and graduated from Bloomington High School in 1938. She went on to study business administration at Indiana University, earning her degree in 1942 as one of only a small number of women in her graduating class. Sue married Richard H. Schmalz in 1946 and the couple went on to have three daughters. While family was always Sue’s main priority, she was a savvy businesswoman, working with her husband as a part-owner of Bloomington Vendors, Inc.

During the 1960’s, Sue earned a real estate license and spent many years along with Richard buying, renovating, renting and selling properties around the Bloomington area. Being an active member of the local community was important to Sue, who served as president of Psi Iota Xi sorority, Wednesday Club, and Unique Club. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, P.E.O., and the Salvation Army Auxiliary. She was also a dedicated Indiana University alumna, serving as a member of the Alumni Association, the Woodburn Guild, the Well House Society, and the I.U. President’s Circle. For several years she served on the Board of the I.U. Center for Human Growth. Bloomington Hospital was another passion for Sue.

She was a longtime member of its Local Council of Women, she served on the Hospital Board of Directors for six years, and as its president for two years. She was also a member and past president of the Hospital Foundation Board, a member and past vice president of the Convalescent Center Board, and a member of the hospital’s Heritage Society. In 2005 she served as co-chair of the Founder’s Day celebration, the opening event of the hospital’s centennial. Sue was a dedicated and loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and mother-in-law who inspired her family with her inner strength, unbounded love, immense grace, and common sense. She touched many lives in Bloomington and beyond and will be forever missed.
