Stuart E. Mayes, 50, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully at 2:20 a.m. Monday, July 10, 2017, at the Center for Hospice Care in Elkhart with his family at his side following a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born, in Elkhart, July 12, 1966, to the late Elmer and Delores “Ann” (Coleman) Mayes and later married Loria Mitchell in Elkhart in 2012. She survives at home.
Also left to cherish his memory are his children, Stuart (Leslie) Mayes and stepdaughter Kaitlyn Mitchell; siblings Sheila Mills and Sidney Mayes; two grandchildren; a stepmother the Rev. Jean Mayes; four stepbrothers; two stepsisters; and a host of extended family.
He was an U.S. Army veteran.
Stuart accepted Christ at a young age. He was a member of St. James AME Church; serving as a trustee, greeter and usher.
A member of the Indiana Black Expo, he enjoyed basketball and spending time with friends and family.
A kind, compassionate and Christian gentleman, he loved to help others whenever he could.
