Steven David Thomas, 60, died Friday, May 6, 2011. Born July 17, 1950, he was predeceased by his father, Frank Sidney Thomas, Sr. and by his brother, Frank Sidney “Sid” Thomas, Jr. He served with the Army’s 101st Airborne in Viet Nam, and was awarded the Viet Nam Service Medal with two bronze stars and several other medals, including the Purple Heart. Born in Birmingham, he spent several early years in Louisville, Kentucky, and later, some time in Phoenix, Arizona, but most of his adult life in Birmingham, where he was a member of Fourth Avenue Baptist Church and later Clearview Baptist Church. Mr. Thomas is survived by a son, Charles David Thomas, of Yelm, Washington; daughters, Carrie Hannis (Glenn), Bossier City, Louisiana, Emily Thomas, Phoenix, Arizona and Caitlyn Thomas, Tempe, Arizona; a granddaughter, Naomi Hannis, Bossier City, Louisiana. Also surviving are his mother, Mrs. Mary Thomas; a sister, Mrs. Kathy Ellis, both of Birmingham, and a brother, Joseph Dan Thomas of Mont Vernon, New Hampshire, along with a number of nieces and nephews.
