Steven J. Barfield, 71, of Meredosia, IL, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 2021, at his home.
He was born May 26, 1950, in Scott County, the son of Cledus Junior and Esther J. Six Barfield. He married Vickie J. Gobel and she survives.
He is also survived by one daughter, Stephanie (Michael) LeSieur of Quincy; one granddaughter, Jalyn Frevert of Meredosia; and two brothers and one sister, Jeff (Jeanette) Barfield of Mt. Sterling, Chris (Bob) Henninger of Chambersburg, and Randall (Tammy) Barfield of Versailles. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Tommy Barfield in infancy and Johnny Barfield.
Mr. Barfield was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, enlisting at the age of 17. He served as an Infantry Paratrooper with the 101st Airborne, earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. He then met the love of his life, Vickie, and they were together for 46 years. In his later years, he dove for sea urchins and mussel shells. He also welded turbine blades until he retired. He loved to travel and have his girls, Vickie, Steph, and Jalyn with him. According to his VA Social Worker he was a “Big Frickin Deal”!
