Steve Darios (Stavros Lambadarios)

January 20, 1925 – June 4, 2022 (age 97)

Steve Darios fell asleep in the lord on June 4, 2022. He lived a wonderful life of 97 years! Steve was born on January 20, 1925 in Mavrohori, Kastoria, Greece as Stavros Lambadarios to Panagiotis and Anastasia Lambadarios. He was raised on a farm with his three brothers Andonis, Ioannis, Vassilis, and his two sisters Manio and Elli. From 1943 – 1949, Stavros fought and was wounded in the Greek Civil War which helped secure Greek’s Democracy.

In 1951, Stavros emigrated to New York with just pennies in his pocket and changed his name to Steve Darios. In the beginning, he made a living washing dishes and shared an apartment so small that when he slept his “feet were sticking out the window”. Despite not being able to speak English, he built a successful business in Manhattan’s New York Garment District on 29th Street. In August of 1961, he returned to Kastoria, Greece where he met and married the lovely Maria Efopoulou on September 10, 1961. After an 11 day journey across the ocean on a ship back to America, Steve and Maria established themselves and saved up to buy a house in Flushing, Queens, NY where they lived for 50 years and raised 3 children.

In 2016, Steve and Maria re-located to Boca Raton, FL where they spent the last 6 years to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Steve is survived by his wife of 60 years Maria, his children Peter (Jaclyn), Basilios (Jenevib), Anastasia (Ash), and his 5 grandsons Stephen, Alexandros, Nicholas, Stavros, and Loukas.

Steve was known for his timely wit, unmatched work ethic, and his immense love for his family. The family thanks you for your love and support during this difficult time.
