November 21, 1954 – February 16, 2017

Retired Kerrville Fire Department, Lieutenant Stephen Henry Tanneberger, 62, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2017 in his Boerne residence. He was born November 21, 1954 in Floresville, Texas, to the late Don and Mary Tanneberger.

Stephen spent most of his childhood in San Antonio, Texas, attending Oliver Wendell Holmes High School, where he enjoyed playing sports until graduating in 1974. Upon graduating, he studied fire science at San Antonio College where he graduated top of his class at the Fire Academy. After spending one year at the Alamo Heights Fire Department, he transferred to Kerrville, Texas, where he served 22 great years. During that time he met former wife Krissy Schwarz, whom he married in 1987 and had a son, Ryan Stephen Tanneberger in 1991.

Stephen was quite the entrepreneur. When he wasn’t at the fire station he found time to start his own company, Tanneberger’s Professional Tree Service. Years later he started Tanneberger’s Nursery Inc., a two-acre sanctuary full of countless exotic plants and animals. He had a passion for everything he did, and was fearless in his adventures of new ideas. He was a talented artist with a fascination for wildlife. He was a lifelong learner with appreciation for everything in nature, from the oldest rock to the furthest star. He was a father, a brother, a laugher, and a giver. He will be missed.

Stephen is predeceased by both parents along with brothers, Jerry and Warren. He is survived by his son Ryan, 25, of Austin, Texas; his brothers Bill Tanneberger, 71, of Cornelia, Georgia, Marshall Tanneberger, 68, of San Diego, California, Martin Tanneberger, 64, of Boerne, Edward Tanneberger, 60, of Boerne; and sisters, Rosemary Stebbins of San Antonio and Eileen Duran of Canyon Lake, Texas.
